When people think about CCTV cameras in schools, they often think about security and protecting school property. While those benefits are important, for Wilmot Road Primary School the decision to install cameras was driven by a different priority – supporting student wellbeing, improving behaviour management and providing greater peace of mind for families.
Having previously worked with Next Tech Group at another school, Principal Kirsten Dickens knew the value that a well-managed CCTV system could bring to both staff and students.
Like many schools, Wilmot Road Primary School faced challenges managing playground incidents and resolving disputes between students. Communicating what had happened could be difficult, particularly in a diverse community where language barriers sometimes made conversations with families more complex.
I guess for me it wasn’t so much about security it was more about behaviour management and child safety
Ms Dickens - School Principal.
Wilmot Road PS had long wrestled with the introduction of cameras to its school. That apprehension was largely around privacy, particularly in sensitive locations such as bathrooms.
Once they realised the cameras won’t be in those areas the parents were very supportive and know we have the ability to reassure them that their kids are safe and they’ve become really supportive of having cameras in the school now
Ms Dickens - School Principal.
Next Tech Group installed a fully compliant CCTV system and video management platform that allows authorised staff to quickly review incidents and verify what occurred.
Once parents understood that cameras would not be installed in sensitive areas, such as bathrooms, support for the project quickly grew. The footage has become a valuable tool for providing reassurance to families, confirming student safety and helping staff have more informed conversations about behaviour.
Rather than relying on conflicting accounts of events, staff can review footage to better understand incidents, identify contributing factors and use real situations as learning opportunities for students.
The cameras have also helped introduce practical processes, such as the use of break cards and lanyards, making it easier to identify students who are out of class and ensuring they remain safe throughout the school day.
"Some of our parents who have come from a trauma background, knowing that a child is safe and that there’s someone watching all the time and that if something happens, we can actually then follow up and follow through with reports of harm.’’
Ms Dickens - School Principal.
